The fastest way to poison usability data is to hint at the “correct” answer.
Even subtle phrasing like “Was anything confusing?” assumes confusion exists.

Task-based questions are the backbone of usability research. Instead of asking users what they think, you observe what they do, then probe their reasoning.
The most valuable moment in usability testing is often silence.
When a participant pauses, scrolls back up, rereads text, or hovers without clicking, I almost always ask:
“What are you looking for right now?”
That single question consistently reveals missing information, unclear hierarchy, or labels that don’t match the user’s mental model.
One important nuance: avoid rescuing participants. Struggle is data. The goal is not task completion. It’s understanding why completion happens or doesn’t.
Capture emotion, not just success

The fix wasn’t redesigning the layout. It was changing the words.
Learnability determines whether first-time users become long-term users.
