Why Research Triggers Work

Traditional research often happens weeks after an event. By then, users have forgotten the details. Research triggers capture feedback in the moment, when context is fresh. You get higher quality insights, faster discovery cycles, and continuous qualitative feedback.

Continuous Discovery from Real Product Behavior

Instead of scheduling occasional interviews, research triggers create a steady stream of contextual insights from real user behavior.
→ User action
→ conversation
→ insight
→ product improvement
This makes learning on autopilot possible without constant recruiting and weeks of research operations work.

FAQ

What is a research trigger?

A research trigger automatically invites a user to a short voice interview when a specific product event occurs, such as signup, cancellation, onboarding drop-off, or checkout abandonment.

How long are the interviews?

Most interviews take 2–5 minutes, but you can configure it to be as long or short as you want. Users simply speak naturally while the AI moderator asks follow-up questions.

How do users receive the interview invite?

Users can be invited through in-product intercepts (small dialog window on bottom or top of your website) or via your custom workflows with a simple webbook integration. Teams choose the method that fits their product experience.

What events can trigger interviews?

Any product event you track in your product can trigger an interview, including:
- signup or account creation
- onboarding drop-off
- feature usage
- checkout abandonment
- subscription cancellation
- support interactions

Do I need to add new tracking events?

No. Research Triggers can use events from your existing analytics tools such as PostHog, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Segment or Google Analytics.

When should I use research triggers instead of surveys?

Research triggers work best when you want to understand context, motivations, or confusion. Short surveys are useful for ratings or quick feedback, while voice interviews reveal deeper insights about what users were trying to do.

Will this interrupt the user experience?

Invitations are lightweight and can be configured with frequency limits, user targeting, throttling rules. This ensures users aren’t repeatedly prompted and you can precisely target the right people at the right time.

Can research triggers work for B2C, SaaS or e-commerce products?

Yes. Teams use research triggers across many product types, including, SaaS and PLG products, fintech apps, e-commerce stores, consumer apps and marketplaces and more. Any product with user events can trigger interviews.

How quickly can we start using research triggers?

Most teams can set up their first trigger in just a few minutes by installing the Usercall snippet and selecting an event to monitor.
