1. Trigger: when the problem became real

“What happened the last time this became a problem?”

You’re looking for context, urgency, and initiating events—not general sentiment.

2. Timeline: what actually happened step-by-step

“What did you do first?”
“What happened right after?”

This is where hidden friction shows up—handoffs, delays, tool switching.

3. Alternatives: what else they tried

“Did you consider or try anything else?”

Users reveal your real competition here—which is often not another product, but a workaround.

4. Friction: where it broke down

“What was the most frustrating part?”

Listen for emotional spikes. That’s where opportunity lives.

5. Stakes: why it mattered

“What happens if this doesn’t get solved?”

This separates minor annoyances from must-solve problems.

6. Frequency: how often it occurs

“How often does this situation come up?”

A painful problem that happens once a year is very different from a mild one that happens daily.

High-impact user interview questions (that actually work)

These consistently produce better signal than traditional scripts:

  • “Walk me through the last time you did this from start to finish.”
  • “What almost stopped you from completing this?”
  • “What did you do before you found your current solution?”
  • “Where did you feel uncertain or stuck?”
  • “What do you do when this process breaks?”
  • “What’s the workaround you rely on most?”

Notice the pattern: every question forces recall, not speculation.

The non-obvious signals most teams miss

What to pay attention to:

  • Hesitation: Users pausing often signals uncertainty or hidden complexity.

  • Workarounds: The strongest signal of unmet need.
